Mastering the Basics on your
Point & Shoot Camera

  • Topics to Include:
    Why use a point and shoot camera?
    What are the strengths and limitations?
    Which camera features do we need to improve your experience?
    Printing?
    Using software to enhance photos
    The Camera is not the most important part of taking photos.
    What to do if the camera won't do it for you.
    Opportunity for photo-shoots and group discussion.

 Beginner Sessions DSLR Outline

Session 1 Get to know your camera
Before you come, please read your manual about "exposure", "ISO",Aperture priority/mode, Shutter Priority/mode and Manual Exposure mode.  Understand as much as you can and write down questions to ask us at the meeting.

Show old film camera with shutter and how the diaphragm 'stops down' during exposure.

Session 2:
Review last sessions field trip images.
Understanding how your camera decides on exposure
Photograph 'white' card and 'black' card.  Why do the tones look so similar (middle grey)?
Introduce idea of 'middle grey' and 18% 'grey card'.

Session 3:
Review last sessions field trip images
Starting to think about Composition.
The never ending learning curve.

Session 4:
Review last sessions field trip images.

 The idea of these workshops is to show basic techniques of photography and digital development of the image.  These workshops will be in a fun, low-key learning environment which will enable members to be knowledgeable at Club meetings and on Club outings. Further Basic Photography Workshops will be held on the 4th Tuesday of each month as long as members show interest.
